5G is on the horizon. In this talk, I will take a service-oriented perspective of 5G aimed at supporting a wide range of services, differing significantly in their service requirements and device types (including machine-type devices).

Access to a common (communication) resource has been one of the fundamental problems in the various networking technologies that have emerged over the last half a century.

The International Conference on Embedded Wireless Systems and Networks (EWSN) is a highly selective single-track international conference focusing on premier research results at the intersection of embedded systems and wireless networking – an area of highest relevance for visionary technologies such as the Internet of Things or Cyber-Physical Systems and application domains such as Smart Production, Smart Cities, or Connected Cars.

Invited by 5TONIC, Mr. Carlos Gavilanes, Strategy Director at Telefonica Corp., has shared with some relevant experts from IMDEA Networks and University Carlos III (UC3M) the vision of the company on the main industry trends and the sector’s outlook for the next three years.

Both the use of very large arrays of antennas and flexible time division duplexing (TDD) designs have become prominent features of next generation 5G cellular systems.
