Marcelo Bagnulo Braun, senior lecturer and researcher of the NETCOM Research Group of Madrid’s Carlos III University (UC3M) Telematics Department, has been appointed as director of the Telefónica-UC3M Chair of Future Internet for Productivity, replacing the recently appointed Director General of Technology Transferral and Business Development of the Ministry of Science and Innovation, Professor Arturo Azcorra.
As part of a continuous effort to foster collaboration in R&D, the Telefónica Chair provides a link between Madrid’s Carlos III University and Telefónica, between the public university and private enterprise. The chair drives research and development activities by bringing to the Carlos III University the operational experience of Telefónica (Spain’s national telecoms operator), which in turn benefits from the developments achieved within the chair. The Telefónica-UC3M Chair falls within the framework of the Programme of Chairs organised by the Carlos III University to encourage the participation of leading companies within the university itself.
The general approach of this chair is geared towards high-quality international research into the Internet of the future for the purposes of productivity. This approach is developed with three main objectives in mind. First, to identify innovation and excellence internationally in this field. Second, to promote the deployment of telematic services online, with an emphasis on services geared towards administration, education, transportation and mass-media, and in particular on the use of future Internet technologies to increase productivity. And last, the aim is to drive the development of professional regulation and career prospects in this area of knowledge.
Marcelo Bagnulo is the first member of a Spanish academic institution and the second Spaniard (after Gonzalo Camarillo, of Ericsson Labs Finland) to be selected as a member of the international group that supervises the architectural development of the Internet: the IAB or Internet Architecture Board. Bagnulo’s career in electrical engineering is one of exemplary interdisciplinary collaboration (research, university, industry), which has produced frontline results in the field of networking, with a deep impact on the future of the Internet. The magnitude of his achievements has led him to participate in several European research projects such as LONG, DAIDALOS, E-Next, 6LINK, RING and OneLab, all successfully completed, and currently he is overseeing Trilogy (Re-Architecting the Future Internet), funded by the European Commission under the Seventh Framework Programme-FP7. Bagnulo, who received an honorary doctorate in 2005 from the UC3M in Communications Technologies, actively collaborates with IMDEA Networks in networking and future Internet research work.
