New talents at IMDEA Networks

We keep growing. In these months the team of Pre-doc and Post-doc researchers has increased

09 September 2020

welcome aboard

The core strength of the institute is its international research team, consisting of talented researchers from 18 different nationalities, which carries out new scientific discoveries in computer networks, and foster the development of emerging technologies.

Elisa Cabana

Dr. Elisa Cabana

Among the new recruits is Dr. Elisa Cabana, who crossed the Atlantic to study her master’s degree and her Ph.D. in Mathematical Engineering at the University Carlos III of Madrid. Her research before coming to IMDEA “gave rise to a new methodology for outlier detection, robust regression, robust classification and quality control, with advantageous performance in case of high dimensional data and high levels of contamination. Outlier detection has numerous applications in several fields such as neuroscience, finance, environmental studies, networks, etc.”. Now she joins the Data Transparency Group led by Dr. Nikolaos Laoutaris as a Post-Doc researcher. At this stage, she really wants to “expand this research path about outlier detection to other applications and learn from my colleagues about other data analysis techniques that are of interest to me, such as neural networks applied to graphs, an area where my next line of research could emerge”.

Álvaro García

Dr. Álvaro García

Along with her, two new Post-Doc researchers join the IMDEA Networks team: Dr. Giuseppe Santaromita and Dr. Álvaro García. Santaromita will work within the Pervasive Wireless Systems group led by Dr. Domenico Giustiniano, and García with Dr. Nikolaos Laoutaris. Currently, García is already collaborating in the PIMCITY project, framed in the Horizon 2020 Program, which aims to resolve many of the frictions over data ownership and privacy related to personal information management systems (PIMS).

Dayrene Frometa

On the other hand, Leonardo Lo Schiavo, Dayrene Frometa, Stavros Eleftherakis, Devriş İşler and Amir Mehrjoo begin their doctoral studies at the institute. Lo Schiavo will work together with our director Dr. Arturo Azcorra and with Dr. Marco Fiore in his main areas of interest: machine learning, 5G networks, network slicing and network virtualization. As a PhD student, he hopes to “create a knowledge background which will be useful for a professional carrier both within the Academia and the Industry”. “I feel that my passion for Telecommunications, my experience on working in international environments and my perseveration in carrying out complex projects will be the key points to perform well at the Institute and to help the Institute’s research to be known all over the world”, explains Lo Schiavo.

Another of the young researchers joining the Pervasive Wireless Systems group headed by Dr. Domenico Giustiniano is Dayrene Frometa. She studied a degree in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering at the Technological University of Havana José Antonio Echeverría (CUJAE) and a Master’s in Communication Systems at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. Prior to joining IMDEA Networks, Dayrene worked as a Lecturer at CUJAE. Hereinafter, she is going to investigate new generation wireless networks, Visible Light Communication (VLC) and millimeter-wave (mm-wave) systems.

Stavros Eleftherakis

Stavros Eleftherakis

Stavros Eleftherakis will be Frometa’s teammate. Like her, this graduate in Mathematics has worked before arriving at the institute as a Teaching Assistant in the department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Crete (Greece). He will conduct his research on machine learning and deep learning.

Devriş İşler, who will work within the group of Dr. Nikolaos Laoutaris, and Amir Mehrjoo, who will be advised by Dr. Albert Banchs, embark on the world of the doctorate too. İşler is graduated and specialized in Computer Engineering and during his Ph.D. years, he will focus on three areas of research fundamentally: cryptography applied to privacy, security, transparency and data protection. In the meantime, Mehrjoo will research about online advertising, data analytics and social networks.

New talents for an institute in constant transformation and at the forefront of innovation.
