The publication 'Speeding Up mmWave Beam Training through Low-Complexity Hybrid Transceivers', authored by a team of IMDEA Networks researchers has been recognized with the Best Student Paper Award at the 27th Annual IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor, and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC) held on 4-7 September 2016 in Valencia, Spain.
The paper addresses two relevant aspects of the initial access procedure at millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequencies. First, it proposes a beam training protocol that effectively accelerates the link establishment by exploiting the ability of mobile users to simultaneously receive from multiple directions. Second, it deals with practical constraints of mmWave hybrid analog-digital transceivers and proposes a novel approach to synthesize multi-beam, multi-beamwidth antenna patterns. Numerical evaluations show that the proposed approach provides up to 70% increase in spectral efficiency against existing state-of-the-art strategies.
The research for this article was carried out in the context of the European project "Millimeter-Wave Based Mobile Radio Access Network for 5G Integrated Communications (mmMAGIC)", which develops new concepts for mobile radio access technology (RAT) to be deployed in the 6-100 GHz range.
The IMDEA Networks awardees are: Joan Palacios (PhD Student also affiliated to University Carlos III of Madrid), Danilo De Donno (Post-Doc Researcher), Domenico Giustiniano (Research Associate Professor), and Joerg Widmer (Research Professor and Research Strategy Manager).
