What steps should be taken to ensure that European industry needs are met and sustained by ICT devices, concepts and paradigms in the world to come after the arrival of 5G?
Future 5G research trends was the topic of an invited presentation given by IMDEA Networks’ director and 5G IA Vision WG Chairman at the 5G-PPP, Arturo Azcorra, during the 7th 5G Global Event, which is organised by the 5G IA/5G PPP and the European Commission.
Under the motto “Creating the smart digital future”, 5G Global offered an opportunity to big players in the 5G arena to paint a global picture of where 5G is and where it is heading. Azcorra’s presentation was part of the «Looking Forward» session, which envisaged a future beyond 5G where smart networks are a reality.
Azcorra’s talk reflected on how the current focus of industrial research work on solving its immediate needs will not be sufficient to sustain European leadership in 5G. It is also necessary to address long-term disruptive research topics, according to Azcorra, which will lay the foundation for future ICT devices, concepts and paradigms.
Azcorra went on to describe the areas that require the attention of the research community looking to make “beyond-5G” technology a working reality. From Quantum Networking to Digital Service Transformation, to the shift from Software-Centric to Human-Centric Services, enabling Network-Unaware Vertical Services, the complex Networking of Nano-Things and Bio-Nano-Things or the impact of IoT on Network and Services, to name but a few, Azcorra laid out the areas of work that should be tackled to ensure that European industry needs are met and sustained by European ICT devices, concepts and paradigms in the world to come after 5G.
5G Global took place in Valencia (Spain) last June 17-18, in conjunction with the EuCNC conference.
