5G Networks: the communications revolution

24 October 2014

Arturo Azcorra participated yesterday in a conference on 5G networks organized by the Telefónica Chair at the University Carlos III of Madrid (UC3M) in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Engineering. The Director of IMDEA Networks and Professor at UC3M delivered a conference entitled "5G Networks: the communications revolution."

Azcorra reflected on how new technologies allow us to perceive our environment differently and how they contribute to change our way of thinking. Technological changes that enable devices such as smartphones make us speak of an "augmented reality". "The smartphone is now an addition to a person, it's you and your mobile phone," said Azcorra. "With augmented reality citizens will not perceive that they carry with them a device; it will be something natural, integrated," he added.

On the topic of the European effort to lead the development of 5G technology, Azcorra stressed: "This is a race in mobile technology and Europe wants to be the winner". Azcorra is directly involved in the evolution of 5G through his roles as board member of the 5G Infrastructure Association in Europe, the European Technology Platform (ETP) NetWorld2020 and the Public-Private Partnership “5G PPP”.
