5TONIC, the open research and innovation laboratory on 5G technologies, founded by Telefónica and IMDEA Networks, has signed a collaboration agreement with the Spanish SME, based in Valencia, Fivecomm focused on research and development of 5G solutions for the industry verticals. The objective of this agreement is the integration and validation of the FIVECOMM 5G Modem (F5GM) as part of the 5TONIC research and innovation laboratory.

During the collaboration, the F5GM will be modified to be updated in the context of the latest 3GPP releases (3rd Generation Partnership Project). The estimated duration of the project will extend until 2023 and will take place at the 5TONIC facilities in Madrid, being the basis for testing and refining the product. This alliance takes place within the framework of the H2020 EU 5G-INDUCE project, an initiative of the European Commission and the European ICT industry, which aims to offer innovative 5G solutions for the next generation of the communication infrastructures, mainly in the vertical sector of the Industry 4.0. In this context, Fivecomm will integrate and validate the F5GM for three use cases: Autonomous fleet management, Smart operation based on human gesture recognition and VR immersion for AGV control. The research will also include the AGVs (automated guided vehicles) from ASTI Mobile Robotics, available at 5TONIC lab and the deployment of Ericsson’s 5G standalone network. Both companies are members of the 5G-INDUCE consortium.

Fivecomm’s mission is to facilitate the adoption of 5G technologies by vertical industries such as robotics, automotive, education, healthcare, industry 4.0 or energy. For Fivecomm’s, this collaboration is “extremely beneficial for us and it is an opportunity to continue the research mission as one of our most important pillars. We have researchers and experts in 5G projects who will be able to help in this profitable collaboration”. Arturo Azcorra, Vicepresident of the 5TONIC lab, highlights “we are very pleased to add a new collaborator to the laboratory. A growing number of companies are joining 5TONIC to innovate and develop projects together with other companies. Our collaborative formula makes possible to achieve particular objectives jointly”.

Recent milestones

5TONIC has carried out a project that validates, through different tests, the use of 5G network for the provision of Cloud Gaming services in the Telefonica network. The project included the deployment of an instance of NVIDIA GeForceNow platform in Lab premises and accesses to Cloud Gaming platforms of Google STADIA and Microsoft XCloud.

The tests have been undertaken at the 5TONIC lab facilities with the collaboration of Ericsson for the provision of the lab 5G network, together with IMDEA team and Telefónica’s capabilities, both in services development and Cloud and Network infrastructure. These tests, developed within the frame of the LUDICO project of Telefonica, lay the foundations to confirm the viability of a Cloud Gaming product deployment.

Furthermore, 5TONIC has recently supported the participation of YerbabuenaVR and UTEK, both collaborators of the lab at the first digital event “Learn and Drive” as a 5G EVE’s project dissemination activity to help SMEs and startups to learn about this European validation platform. Other companies also showcased their use cases, such as Gammasg and Fivecomm.

About 5TONIC

5TONIC was initiated by Telefónica and IMDEA Networks Institute with a clear vision to create an open research and innovation ecosystem laboratory in which industry and academia come together to boost technology and business innovative ventures. The laboratory promotes joint project development, joint entrepreneurial ventures, discussion fora, events and conference sites, all in an international environment of the highest impact. 5TONIC serves to show the capabilities and interoperation of pre-commercial 5G equipment, services and applications, by leading global companies in the 5G arena. The laboratory was recently awarded Digital Innovation Hub status by the European Commission.
