08 October 2019

A Brazilian delegation from the city Campinas began last week an official mission to Portugal and Spain. They were seeking to witness personally the innovation ecosystems and successful experiences in smart cities and business internationalization. The delegation made a stop at IMDEA Networks on October 3rd.

The mission components were Carlos Passos, Technical Coordinator of Science, Technology and Innovation in the Department of Economic, Social and Tourism Development of the City of Campinas and María Luisa Campos Machado Leal, Head of the Campinas Strategic Project “Smart City 2019-2029” and Partner Director of the Innovation and Business Agency. They represented the city of Campinas, situated in Sao Paulo state and one of the most prosperous cities in Brazil, quickly moving to digitalization, and host of important 5G firms like Qualcomm, which is opening next year a factory for IoT processors.

They were accompanied in their visit by Ramón Girona, General Manager at IMDEA Networks and Ignacio Berberana, Senior Research Engineer and responsible of the 5TONIC Lab. Passos and Campos showed great interest in the technologies that are currently being developed at the institute, the activities carried out by 5TONIC’s Lab and the trials in 5G vertical services. The possibility of opening avenues for cooperation and joint action was also discussed by the representatives of Campinas and the IMDEA Networks researchers.

The exchange of researchers in areas like 5G and IoT was one of the options to be further analyzed. They were also invited to see the 5TONIC demo that was being shown at the South Summit 2019, an event that intends to connect disruptive startups with worldwide investors and corporations seeking to improve their global competitiveness through innovation.
