Biography

Ashkan Abdollahi Nami is a PhD student at IMDEA Networks Institute and a MSCA doctoral researcher in the Horizon Europe SpecX Doctoral Network. His research focuses on low-power RF front-ends for FR3/mmWave spectrum monitoring, with applications in IoT communications and sensing. He works under the supervision of Dr. Joerg Widmer and Dr. Andrea Bedin.

Before joining IMDEA Networks, he worked at CoreHW Oy in Tampere HQ, Finland, progressing from RF and antenna testing trainee to Thesis Worker and Junior Engineer, and subsequently Junior RTLS Engineer. His work involved RF and antenna measurements, automated measurement workflows. He also contributed to PCB design and schematic reviews using Altium Designer, hardware integration, debugging, validation, and quality and reliability testing. In the RTLS team, he worked with Bluetooth Angle of Arrival (AoA), channel sounding, and tools for data analysis and test automation. His responsibilities also included embedded-system integration, API communication, and Linux-based networking and system configuration.

He completed his MSc in Wireless Communication and RF Systems at Tampere University, Finland. His master’s thesis, Indoor Positioning Using Combined Bluetooth AoA & Channel Sounding, investigated indoor positioning using complementary Bluetooth direction-finding and channel-sounding techniques. The work was carried out with academic supervision from Tampere University and industry collaboration with CoreHW. His thesis is available through the Tampere University research repository (Trepo). He also holds a BSc in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tabriz.

Earlier in his career, he worked as a Signal Processing Trainee at Nurarta Optoelectronics, Innovation Center, University of Tabriz, where he worked on optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR), including noise-reduction algorithms. His work also involved PCB design, schematic and layout review, and embedded development with various communication interfaces.

In addition to his engineering experience, he served as a Teaching Assistant for the Signals and Systems course at the University of Tabriz. He was also actively involved in student life at Tampere University, serving as a board member of Sähkökilta, the university’s Electrical Engineering Guild, for 2.5 years. During this time, he contributed to student community activities and served as an event photographer and student tutor, supporting student engagement, peer learning, and university events.

His technical interests include low-power RF front-ends, antenna design and characterization, mmWave systems, wireless localization, signal processing, IoT communications and sensing, embedded systems, and automated measurement systems.
