Effective scientific writing is a fundamental skill for researchers, enabling them to communicate their findings clearly, concisely, and persuasively. This four-hour workshop (in English) is designed to provide participants with both theoretical insights and hands-on exercises to improve their academic writing.
The first part of the workshop (until 11:15 AM) will consist of a lecture-based session, where key principles of scientific writing will be introduced. The instructor will provide examples of well-structured titles and summary paragraphs, highlighting best practices and common pitfalls. Attendees will be engaged through interactive questioning to assess their familiarity with the concepts discussed.
Following a short break, the second half of the session will be interactive and exercise-based. Participants will complete three structured writing exercises, focusing on:
For each exercise, attendees will have 10-15 minutes to draft their responses and submit them electronically. Selected submissions will be anonymously reviewed and discussed, with live feedback and practical suggestions for improvement.
Jordi Pérez Colomé (Barcelona, 1976) is a renowned journalist and writer specializing in technology and international politics. With a degree in Journalism and Italian Philology and a master’s in International Relations, he has built a distinguished career in various media outlets and as a university lecturer.
He was the director of the cultural magazine El Ciervo and the author of the blog Obamaworld, where he analyzed U.S. politics and pioneered crowdfunding-funded international reporting in Spain. He has also taught writing and international journalism at institutions such as the University of Barcelona, the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, and the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya.
Currently, he is a technology reporter at El País, covering the social impact of the internet and emerging technologies, and a professor at the Universidad Carlos III. His journalistic work has earned him awards such as the José Manuel Porquet Digital Journalism Prize (2012) and the iRedes Letras Enredadas Prize (2014).
He has authored several books, including Un Estado y medio, Cómo escribir claro, La historia de tres campañas, El país esquizofrénico, En la campaña de Obama, and Adiós, Gongtan, covering topics from international conflicts to effective writing techniques.
His extensive experience in journalism and communication makes him a leading voice in scientific and professional writing.
