IMDEA Networks’ Wireless Networking Group headed by Prof. Joerg Widmer invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in the area of data-driven network planning and configuration for future 6G networks. The successful candidate will contribute to the ongoing activities of the group in conducting comprehensive mobile network measurements, data collection, and analysis in diverse urban locations. The research will employ advanced measurement tools, statistical analysis, and AI to derive insights into current network performance, enabling improvements and optimizations. Particular emphasis will be devoted to ensure explainability and reliability of the AI models developed. The project’s expected outcomes are to contribute valuable data and knowledge to enhance the deployment and operation of current 5G and future 6G networks.

The position requires:

  • a degree in Computer Science or related field, with a solid academic record
  • excellent programming skills
  • a strong interest in applied AI for telecoms
  • at least one of (a) experience with network systems or (b) strong AI know-how
  • fluency in written and spoken English
  • enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research.
