With the increasing use of mobile devices and, particularly, the widespread use of smartphones in everyday life, there is a continuous exposure and collection of different types of data. Despite the multiple benefits that come for both services and users, there are also numerous privacy risks that can arise from collecting such data. This seminar shows the privacy impact of accessing Wi-Fi information on mobile devices, as well as the privacy implications of exploring correlations between Wi-Fi and location data. Our study reveals the possibility of fingerprinting users from Wi-Fi, with the most frequent Wi-Fi access point per user being sufficient to uniquely identify above 90% of the users.

About Mariana Cunha

Mariana Cunha received her BSc and MSc degrees in Informatics Engineering in 2017 and 2019, respectively, from the University of Coimbra, Portugal. Currently, she is a PhD student enrolled in the Doctoral Program in Computer Science at the University of Porto, Portugal. Mariana works as a researcher at CISUC and INESC TEC, and her main research interests include data privacy, location privacy, privacy in mobile devices, and privacy-preserving data mining.
