The Global Computing Group headed by Dr. Antonio FERNÁNDEZ ANTA invites applicants for a fully funded PhD position.

The Global Computing Group explores distributed computing systems and social networks in the widest sense. Among others, it has the following lines of research: (i) fault-tolerant distributed ledger technologies; (ii) volunteer and crowd-based computing, with emphasis on game-theoretic aspects; (iii) analysis of networks using big data and machine learning technologies.

Within the line of research on distributed ledgers, PhD student candidates are sought with a strong background on blockchain, game theory, principles of distributed computing, programming, and mathematics. During their PhD, they will devise and develop new techniques and algorithms for systems of lightly-coupled fault-tolerant distributed concurrent objects, and they will implement them as proof-of-concept prototypes.

As a member of the group, the candidate will also have the opportunity to collaborate with top researchers from all over the world in a multi-disciplinary and international environment.

The position requires:

  • BSc or MSc in computer science, statistics, mathematics, electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in principles of distributed systems, distributed ledgers and blockchains, game theory, mathematics, and economics. 
  • Programming experience, desirably in distributed systems. Additional experience with data analysis and machine learning will be appreciated.
  • Experience in research and development, and publication of research papers is a plus.
  • Excellent analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Very good organization and communication skills.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
