From Network Economics to Physics: A Journey Through Research and Industry

Syed Anwar Ul Hasan, Postdoctoral Researcher at ETH Zurich, Switzerland

External Presentation (External Speaker)

This talk traces a journey across research and entrepreneurship, from network economics to software for physics data. It began at IMDEA Networks with research on Internet topology and the optimization of cache deployments for content delivery networks. Toward the end of the Ph.D., that work expanded to include online machine learning and combinatorial optimization. The journey then took an unexpected turn into entrepreneurship in India, with the co-founding of a startup focused on price intelligence and product discovery. Returning to academia brought a change of field: first applying machine learning to particle physics at CERN, then developing software for astroparticle physics data at ETH Zurich. The talk will reflect on the challenges of moving across fields and between academia and industry, and lessons learned along the way.

About Syed Hasan

Syed Hasan earned his M.Sc. in Communications and Computer Security from Institut EURECOM/Telecom ParisTech in 2009 and his Ph.D. in Telematics Engineering from Carlos III University of Madrid in 2016, supervised by Dr. Sergey Gorinsky. At IMDEA Networks, he researched Internet topology and network economics and collaborated with Prof. Constantine Dovrolis (Georgia Tech) and Prof. Ramesh Sitaraman (University of Massachusetts Amherst/Akamai). After his Ph.D., Syed co-founded Priceflier, an Indian e-commerce startup focused on price intelligence and product discovery, with Pradeep Bangera. He returned to Europe as a CERN Research Fellow, applying machine learning to particle physics. Since 2022, he has worked at ETH Zurich as a postdoctoral researcher in Prof. Adrian Biland’s group. He develops software for the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO). His interests include machine learning for physics, network economics, and reliable, secure distributed systems.
