PhD position in explainable and robust AI for O-RAN Networks Data Science group

Deadline for receipt of applications: June 14th, 2023 23:59 AoE (15 June 2023, 13:59h Europe/Madrid Time)

The IMDEA Networks Institute offers one fully funded PhD position in the area of explainable and robust Artificial Intelligence (AI) applied to Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN).The successful candidate will contribute to ongoing activities of the the Wireless Networking Group [1] and the Networks Data Science group [2], by advancing the state of the art and promote open, interpretable and robust AI lifecycles in O-RAN environments; to this end, he/she will design and implement mechanisms to reveal AI decisions logic, harness such insights to optimize specific components of the AI lifecycle like online training and network performance, and spot and address inconsistent AI behaviors.

All work will be carried out in the specific context of AI-driven programmable software components within the O-RAN centralized abstraction layers, so as to optimize runtime operations of future generation RAN infrastructures.

The position offers:

  •  hands-on training in deploying and running O-RAN experimental platforms
  •  hands-on training in applying AI models in practical network environments
  •  a unique opportunity to work with large-scale real-world measurement data
  •  a vibrant, collaborative, multi-cultural and English-speaking environment
  •  the prospect to publish at top-tier venues in networking
  •  the high quality of life of the region of Madrid, Spain, where we are based.

The position requires:

  •   a degree in Computer Science or related field, with a solid academic record
  •  excellent programming skills
  •  a strong interest in applied AI for telecoms
  •  at least one of (a) experience with network systems or (b) strong AI know-how
  •  fluency in written and spoken English
  •  enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research.

Inquiries on the position can be directed via mail to the co-supervisors, Dr. Claudio Fiandrino (claudio.fiandrino@imdea.org) and Dr. Marco Fiore
