Suman Banerjee, named ACM Fellow 2020

The researcher was Visiting Professor in 2019 at IMDEA Networks and will be professor with double affiliation from the second half of 2021 onwards

Suman Banerjee, professor in computer science at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he is the founding director of the WiNGS laboratory (which focuses on research in wireless and mobile networking systems), has been named ACM Fellow 2020. Banerjee previously collaborated with IMDEA Networks during his stay as a visiting professor in 2019 and will be professor with double affiliation from the second half of 2021 onwards.

Only 1 percent of ACM members (the world’s largest computing society) are chosen as fellows for their “outstanding accomplishments in computing and information technology.” The organization has more than 100,000 members, and has named 95 members ACM Fellows for contributions in areas including artificial intelligence, cloud computing, computer graphics, computational biology, data science, human-computer interaction, software engineering, theoretical computer science, and virtual reality, among other areas. The 2020 Fellows represent universities, corporations and research centers in Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Germany, Israel, Japan, The Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Suman Banerjee received his undergraduate degree from IIT Kanpur in computer science and engineering, and the MS and PhD degrees from the University of Maryland. While at Wisconsin, he received the NSF CAREER award from the US National Science Foundation and the inaugural Rockstar Award from ACM SIGMOBILE for early career achievements and contributions in his field.

He has authored more than 100 technical papers in leading journals and conferences in the field, including the ACM/IEEE Transactions on Networking, the ACM/IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, ACM Sigcomm, ACM MobiCom, IEEE Infocom, ACM MobiSys, ACM CoNEXT, ACM IMC, IEEE Dyspan, and more. He also received best paper awards from conferences such as ACM MobiCom, ACM CoNEXT, and IEEE Dyspan. He served as the chair of ACM SIGMOBILE between 2013 and 2017 and is a member of the IEEE.
