Esta constataci\u00f3n ha dado lugar al surgimiento de un gran inter\u00e9s en materia de eficiencia energ\u00e9tica por parte de los operadores de las redes de telecomunicaciones, los proveedores de servicios de Internet as\u00ed como los proveedores de contenidos. Los ahorros de energ\u00eda consumida por los data centers pueden traducirse en una contribuci\u00f3n directa a los resultados de una compa\u00f1\u00eda, proporcionando asimismo amplios beneficios en los \u00e1mbitos de responsabilidad social corporativa y medio ambiente. Con este objetivo en mente, el <a href=\"http:\/\/www.networks.imdea.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" name=\"\">Institute IMDEA Networks<\/a> y la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) han lanzado un nuevo programa financiado por el Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovaci\u00f3n y dirigido al dise\u00f1o de algoritmos y t\u00e9cnicas que permitan reducir el consumo energ\u00e9tico de los sistemas de comunicaci\u00f3n, sin perjudicar por ello, de manera significativa, a la calidad del servicio. El programa, denominado Energy Efficient Networks (Redes con eficiencia energ\u00e9tica), utilizar\u00e1 un enfoque multinivel (cross-layer) que incluya algoritmos y t\u00e9cnicas que se aplicar\u00e1n en capas de enlace, de transporte de red y de aplicaci\u00f3n. Se llevar\u00e1 a cabo desde enero de 2012 hasta diciembre de 2014.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">La investigaci\u00f3n tendr\u00e1 lugar a dos niveles: por un lado, en las capas de enlace, red y transporte; y por otro lado, en la capa de aplicaci\u00f3n. En lo que respecta a la capa de red, los investigadores definir\u00e1n tanto el consumo energ\u00e9tico como los modelos de tr\u00e1fico para los elementos de red en configuraciones tales como las redes LAN, WAN y los data centers, lo cual les permitir\u00e1 buscar mejoras que resulten de aplicaci\u00f3n para diferentes modelos de uso. Las aplicaciones tales como la distribuci\u00f3n de contenidos abarcan todos estos \u00e1mbitos, por lo que este tipo de optimizaci\u00f3n conjunta deber\u00eda conducir a resultados a\u00fan mejores. Los investigadores crear\u00e1n t\u00e9cnicas de dise\u00f1o tales como algoritmos de enrutamiento y programaci\u00f3n (routing and scheduling) para minimizar el consumo energ\u00e9tico global, analizando adem\u00e1s el rendimiento de los sistemas desarrollados y evalu\u00e1ndolos mediante experimentos en banco de pruebas y simulaciones. Las t\u00e9cnicas resultantes tambi\u00e9n ser\u00e1n evaluadas con respecto a c\u00f3mo pueden ahorrar energ\u00eda en \u00e1reas que no est\u00e9n conectadas a una red, tales como el manejo de electrodom\u00e9sticos o la recarga de veh\u00edculos el\u00e9ctricos, que conllevan desaf\u00edos similares a los retos a los que nos enfrentamos en el mundo de las comunicaciones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">El proyecto tambi\u00e9n se centrar\u00e1 en la capa de aplicaci\u00f3n, empleando una variedad de t\u00e9cnicas te\u00f3ricas, de simulaci\u00f3n y de medici\u00f3n de Internet, prest\u00e1ndole adem\u00e1s una especial atenci\u00f3n a las aplicaciones de distribuci\u00f3n de contenido, dado que \u00e9stas aglutinan la mayor parte del actual tr\u00e1fico de Internet. En este \u00e1mbito, el proyecto se ha marcado tres objetivos relacionados: el dise\u00f1o de algoritmos de programaci\u00f3n de distribuci\u00f3n de contenido que minimicen la merma de energ\u00eda; el dise\u00f1o de un cliente entre pares (P2P) con eficiencia energ\u00e9tica; y la implementaci\u00f3n del cliente P2P en un prototipo que se pondr\u00e1 a disposici\u00f3n del p\u00fablico. Los investigadores analizar\u00e1n el balance rendimiento\/consumo energ\u00e9tico de las distintas infraestructuras de distribuci\u00f3n de contenido para los Contenidos Generados por los Usuarios (User Generated Content o UGC) \u2013 como por ejemplo, la entrega centralizada vs. P2P \u2013 utilizando rastros de datos reales de aplicaciones conocidas como YouTube y redes sociales como Facebook y Twitter. Bas\u00e1ndose en los resultados de este estudio, los investigadores dise\u00f1ar\u00e1n una nueva arquitectura de distribuci\u00f3n de contenido para reducir el despilfarro de energ\u00eda de la distribuci\u00f3n de UGC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">El proyecto Energy Efficient Networks forma parte del compromiso m\u00e1s amplio por parte del Institute IMDEA Networks hacia la investigaci\u00f3n centrada en la resoluci\u00f3n de problemas reales de nuestro mundo y la mejora del bienestar social. El proyecto se suma, asimismo, a la <a href=\"http:\/\/www.networks.imdea.org\/Scientificactivities\/Researchareas\/tabid\/642\/Default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" name=\"\">extensa investigaci\u00f3n en materia de eficiencia energ\u00e9tica<\/a> del Instituto, incluyendo la pr\u00f3xima conferencia <a href=\"http:\/\/e-energy2012.networks.imdea.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" name=\"\">e-Energy 2012<\/a>, as\u00ed como a la especial atenci\u00f3n que se le est\u00e1 prestando a los sistemas de TIC m\u00e1s eficientes y la utilizaci\u00f3n de las TICs para fomentar una mayor reducci\u00f3n del consumo energ\u00e9tico. Cabe mencionar, asimismo, uno de los proyectos de investigaci\u00f3n, actualmente en curso en el Instituto, que se denomina <a href=\"http:\/\/www.networks.imdea.org\/Scientificactivities\/Researchprojects\/tabid\/1255\/Default.aspx#GREEN-NETWORK\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" name=\"\">Green Network<\/a> (Red ecol\u00f3gica). Dicho proyecto, que se est\u00e1 llevando a cabo con la colaboraci\u00f3n de varias instituciones en Espa\u00f1a, Estados Unidos y China, gira en torno a las teor\u00edas y t\u00e9cnicas existentes para reducir el consumo energ\u00e9tico mundial a nivel de la red. IMDEA Networks tambi\u00e9n participa activamente en el proyecto <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fp7-trend.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" name=\"\">TREND<\/a> (Towards Real Energy-Efficient Network Design) (Hacia el Dise\u00f1o de una Red Real con Eficiencia Energ\u00e9tica), una Red Europea de Excelencia sobre Redes con Eficiencia Energ\u00e9tica.
