La instalaci\u00f3n integra tecnolog\u00edas de \u00faltima generaci\u00f3n, como WiFi 7 y 5G en banda milim\u00e9trica (mmWave) que opera en la banda de frecuencia de 26 GHz, lo que demuestra el potencial de estas tecnolog\u00edas para la cobertura exterior de alta capacidad.<\/p>\n<p>La farola inteligente, dise\u00f1ada y suministrada por ANDREW, puede ocultar todas las conexiones el\u00e9ctricas del emplazamiento y los equipos de radio de banda media dentro de su base, lo que garantiza una instalaci\u00f3n limpia y discreta. En la parte superior, una farola personalizada integra el alumbrado p\u00fablico para lograr una est\u00e9tica perfecta, al tiempo que ofrece posibilidades de montaje para las tecnolog\u00edas 5G de pr\u00f3xima generaci\u00f3n y las futuras tecnolog\u00edas 6G. Este innovador dise\u00f1o alberga un punto de acceso WiFi 7 de Ruckus, un gNB (estaci\u00f3n base) en banda milim\u00e9trica 5G y una antena ANDREW de 10 puertos que proporciona una conectividad de alta capacidad sin comprometer la armon\u00eda visual de los espacios p\u00fablicos.<\/p>\n<p>El nuevo equipo 5G mmWave instalado en la farola ha sido suministrado por Ericsson, configurado en <strong>modo Stand Alone (SA)<\/strong> con Dual Connectivity (DC), que interopera con un segundo gNB de Ericsson que opera en la banda media (3,5 GHz). Esta configuraci\u00f3n permite a la red combinar la capacidad ultra alta de las frecuencias de onda milim\u00e9trica con las caracter\u00edsticas de cobertura m\u00e1s amplia del espectro de banda media, lo que optimiza tanto el rendimiento como la fiabilidad. En el sistema desplegado, la capa de radio de ondas milim\u00e9tricas se dedica exclusivamente al tr\u00e1fico del plano de usuario, mientras que la capa de banda media (FR1, que opera a 3,5 GHz) sirve de ancla para la se\u00f1alizaci\u00f3n del plano de control. Esta arquitectura garantiza que todo el tr\u00e1fico de datos se beneficie de la alta capacidad del enlace mmWave siempre que haya cobertura disponible, al tiempo que se mantiene una conectividad robusta del plano de control a trav\u00e9s de la capa de banda media. Durante las pruebas, no se aplic\u00f3 ninguna agregaci\u00f3n del plano de usuario entre FR1 y FR2 (26 GHz), para permitir una evaluaci\u00f3n clara del rendimiento independiente de cada capa de radio. Cuando el equipo del usuario se desplaz\u00f3 m\u00e1s all\u00e1 del \u00e1rea de cobertura efectiva de la banda milim\u00e9trica, el sistema pas\u00f3 sin problemas a funcionar solo en banda media tanto para el plano de usuario como para el de control, lo que demostr\u00f3 la resistencia de la conectividad dual en 5G.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"267\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-29624 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/networks.imdea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/media-file-pr-farola-5-267x300.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>La campa\u00f1a de medici\u00f3n del sistema desplegado, llevada a cabo en seis ubicaciones al aire libre<\/strong> a distancias crecientes de la farola, evalu\u00f3 el sistema con dos asignaciones de ancho de banda milim\u00e9trica: una sola portadora (100 MHz de ancho de banda) y ocho portadoras agregadas (800 MHz de ancho de banda total para el enlace descendente y 400 MHz de ancho de banda total para el enlace ascendente). En condiciones de l\u00ednea de visi\u00f3n, la configuraci\u00f3n de ocho portadoras alcanz\u00f3 un rendimiento medio estable de 3,9 Gbps en el enlace descendente, con un enlace ascendente de hasta 239 Mbps, lo que confirma la considerable capacidad adicional que puede lograrse con la tecnolog\u00eda de ondas milim\u00e9tricas en comparaci\u00f3n con las implementaciones convencionales de banda media.<\/p>\n<p>Las mediciones de latencia revelaron una latencia media de ida y vuelta de 4,5 milisegundos en todos los puntos de medici\u00f3n dentro de la cobertura de ondas milim\u00e9tricas, independientemente de la configuraci\u00f3n del operador y tanto en condiciones de l\u00ednea de visi\u00f3n (LoS) como de l\u00ednea de visi\u00f3n parcialmente obstruida (NLoS), lo que pone de relieve las ventajas de rendimiento que supone mantener la conectividad de ondas milim\u00e9tricas para aplicaciones sensibles a la latencia.<\/p>\n<p>Estos hallazgos validan la idoneidad de las implementaciones de mmWave basadas en farolas inteligentes para escenarios exteriores de alta capacidad en los que se puede garantizar la l\u00ednea de visi\u00f3n directa o casi directa, como zonas peatonales, lugares p\u00fablicos y campus universitarios, y pueden proporcionar informaci\u00f3n valiosa para la planificaci\u00f3n y optimizaci\u00f3n de futuras implementaciones de redes urbanas densas.<\/p>\n<p>El equipo instalado en la farola inteligente se ha conectado al n\u00facleo de red 5G de NEXTONIC, proporcionado por Ericsson. Esta integraci\u00f3n permitir\u00e1 a los investigadores <strong>probar y validar funcionalidades avanzadas de red en un entorno exterior real<\/strong>, lo que permitir\u00e1 aprovechar todas las capacidades de la infraestructura 5G SA del laboratorio.<\/p>\n<p>El despliegue ha sido financiado a trav\u00e9s del proyecto <strong>ADVANCE-6G<\/strong> (Adquisici\u00f3n de Equipos para la Infraestructura Cient\u00edfica de Computaci\u00f3n y Comunicaciones para la Experimentaci\u00f3n Avanzada en Redes 6G), que fue adjudicado a IMDEA Networks en el marco del Programa UNICO I+D 6G 2022, dentro del Plan de Recuperaci\u00f3n, Transformaci\u00f3n y Resiliencia (PRTR) espa\u00f1ol, financiado por la Uni\u00f3n Europea \u2013 NextGenerationEU. El proyecto tiene como objetivo dotar a IMDEA Networks de la infraestructura cient\u00edfica y t\u00e9cnica necesaria para abordar la experimentaci\u00f3n avanzada en 5G y 6G de forma integrada. M\u00e1s informaci\u00f3n sobre el proyecto se puede encontrar aqu\u00ed.<\/p>\n<p>En el marco de este mismo proyecto, <strong>actualmente se est\u00e1 desarrollando una implantaci\u00f3n m\u00e1s amplia de la red en el campus de la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid<\/strong> (UC3M) en Legan\u00e9s. Esta ampliaci\u00f3n incluir\u00e1 tres farolas inteligentes adicionales, tambi\u00e9n suministradas por Andrew y Ericsson, lo que crear\u00e1 un banco de pruebas m\u00e1s amplio para la investigaci\u00f3n sobre la cobertura de ondas milim\u00e9tricas en exteriores, escenarios de movilidad y funciones avanzadas de red en el entorno de un campus universitario.<\/p>\n<p>El despliegue ha sido posible gracias al apoyo de Telef\u00f3nica, que ha puesto a disposici\u00f3n el espectro radioel\u00e9ctrico necesario para operar la red. Esta colaboraci\u00f3n pone de relieve la s\u00f3lida alianza entre la industria de las telecomunicaciones y las instituciones de investigaci\u00f3n para impulsar el desarrollo y la validaci\u00f3n de tecnolog\u00edas inal\u00e1mbricas de vanguardia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEsta implementaci\u00f3n es un claro ejemplo de c\u00f3mo la iniciativa UNICO I+D ha permitido a IMDEA Networks mejorar su infraestructura de investigaci\u00f3n para tecnolog\u00edas inal\u00e1mbricas avanzadas\u201d, afirm\u00f3 <strong>Carlos Bernardos<\/strong>, catedr\u00e1tico de la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid y profesor investigador a tiempo parcial en IMDEA Networks. \u201cA trav\u00e9s de este proyecto, hemos podido probar capacidades clave de 5G Advanced, como el <strong>acceso a ondas milim\u00e9tricas y la conectividad dual<\/strong>, en escenarios reales al aire libre, lo que sienta las bases para futuros experimentos con 6G. Logros como estos refuerzan nuestra base cient\u00edfica y ayudan a acelerar la traducci\u00f3n de la investigaci\u00f3n en soluciones pr\u00e1cticas, lo que en \u00faltima instancia reporta beneficios a la Sociedad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAl proporcionar a los investigadores de IMDEA Networks acceso directo a la tecnolog\u00eda 5G mmWave, se pueden descubrir casos de uso y aplicaciones innovadoras en exteriores a trav\u00e9s de la experimentaci\u00f3n abierta.
