En los últimos años, la creciente concienciación social sobre la necesidad de contener el consumo de energía dentro de tasas sostenibles ha captado el interés de las comunidades empresarial y académica. En este escenario, Internet - y más en general las TIC - puede desempeñar un doble papel, siendo a la vez un importante consumidor de energía y un actor potencial en un cambio de dirección hacia un uso más inteligente de los recursos energéticos.

El simposio internacional de computación distribuida (International Symposium on DIStributed Computing - DISC) es un foro internacional sobre la teoría, el diseño, el análisis, la implementación y la aplicación de sistemas y redes distribuidas. Está organizado en cooperación con la Asociación Europea de Informática Teórica (EATCS - European Association for Theoretical Computer Science). Este congreso, en colaboración con el simposio de ACM sobre principios de computación distribuida (PODC-ACM Symposium on Principles of Distributed Computing), otorga anualmente el prestigioso galardón Edsger W. Dijkstra Prize in Distributed Computing y el premio a la mejor disertación en computación distribuida (The Dissertation Award in Distributed Computing).

Handoff is a key element in the wireless cellular networks in order to provide Quality of Service (QoS) to the users and to support users’ mobility. Handoff failure will result in the forced termination of an ongoing call. From the user’s point of view, the service of a handoff request is more important, as the forced termination of an ongoing call is more annoying than the blocking of new calls. Therefore, in order to support QoS to the users and to provide ubiquitous coverage, the handoff procedure should be further investigated. The aim of this lecture is to provide a comprehensive survey of the basic elements, the different types and phases of the handoff procedure.
