With the arrival of publicly-available quantum computers, the field of quantum computation and communication has made a fast transition from a pure research domain, at the boundary between physics and computer science, to an applied technology with wide-ranging applications.
Companies, research institutes and universities have been quick to realize the importance of quantum computation for fields such as materials science, quantum chemistry, cryptography and key distribution or quantum machine learning. As quantum computers take as input and manipulate quantum states, robust communications networks for such states are required, and these differ in many respects from their classical counterparts. In particular, sending a quantum state between two end-points requires the generation and routing of a new resource, namely quantum entanglement. Additional physical constraints, such as the No-Cloning Theorem, which forbids one to make multiple copies of a quantum state, require novel algorithms as well as hardware approaches, to accomplish the goal of constructing a global quantum network.
The 13th IMDEA Networks Annual International Workshop focuses on presenting the most recent developments in the area of quantum networks and quantum communications, as well as other related quantum computational topics, uniting scientists and researchers interested in the fundamental problems of quantum information.
