13 July 2015

Dr. Boavida brings to the research team extensive research experience in areas broadly including wireless sensor networks, mobility, quality of service and computer networks.

IMDEA Networks has announced that Dr. Fernando Boavida from the University of Coimbra (Portugal) will join the Institute in September 2015 in the role of Visiting Professor, bringing to the research team extensive experience in wireless sensor networks, mobility, quality of service and computer networks. During his stay at IMDEA Networks Institute Dr. Boavida will carry out joint research in the area of Internet of Things and Connected Smart Objects, with emphasis on, but not restricted to, people-to-things and people-to-people interactions. The main objective is the research of solutions that can support middleware, platforms and applications in areas such as smart cities, e-learning, and e-health contexts, with the aim of demonstrating their use in enhancing the autonomy and quality of life of citizens.

In these contexts, Dr. Boavida’s work will aim at identifying the needs and means towards health and general monitoring, safety, assistance, ubiquitous location, context-awareness, autonomy, security and privacy of the involved target user types. As well as pursuing his own scientific interests and sharing his expertise, during his stay in Madrid Dr. Boavida will join the Institute in various activities, such as mentoring young researchers, organizing scientific seminars, and supporting current research projects, amongst others. He will also be collaborating with researchers from the Telematics Engineering Department at University Carlos III of Madrid.

Dr. Boavida’s academic and research career has revolved around the University of Coimbra, in Portugal, his home country. There he received his Ph.D. degree in Informatics Engineering in 1990. At present, he is Full Professor at the Department of Informatics Engineering (DEI) of its Faculty of Sciences and Technology. He is also the founder of the Laboratory of Communications and Telematics (LCT) within the DEI, the Director of the Centre for Informatics and Systems, and the Strategic Director for Communications and Information Technology, all at Coimbra University.

His scientific track record gives testimony to a meritorious career. He has authored over a hundred and seventy international peer-reviewed journal and conference publications as well as fifty articles in national fora. He has served on the editorial board of some of the main periodicals in the field of communications and computer networks, currently serving on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Computer Communications journal. Furthermore, his curriculum of scientific service includes his participation on organization and technical program committees for various conferences and workshops, including key venues for the diffusion of computer science and networking scientific results, such as IEEE INFOCOM.

Dr. Boavida has been a very active participant in European research projects, amongst which can here be listed E-NEXT (Network of Excellence on Emerging Networking Experiments and Technologies), EuQoS (End-to-end Quality of Service support over heterogeneous networks), WEIRD (WiMAX Extension to Isolated Research Data networks), OpenNet (Open Interconnect for the Internet Community), CONTENT (Content Networks and Services for Home Users), GINSENG (Performance Control in Wireless Sensor Networks) and MICIE (Tool for systemic risk analysis and secure mediation of data ex-changed across linked CI information infrastructures).

He is a senior member of the IEEE and a licensed Professional Engineer.
