Kirill Kogan spent over a decade (2000-2012) at Cisco Systems as a Technical Leader, where he worked on platforms C12000 and ASR1000. During his work at Cisco, he formalized his knowledge by earning a Ph.D. degree at Ben-Gurion University, Israel (2008-2012). He spent one year as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Waterloo, Canada, where he worked with Srinivasan Keshav in ISS4E group and Alejandro Lopez-Ortiz in Algorithms and Complexity group. Later, he worked with Patrick Eugster in DPDS group at the Purdue University, USA.

Dr. Kirill Kogan joined the Institute in January 2015 in the role of Research Assistant Professor, as a promising researcher with several years of experience in the broad area of networked systems. He proved his ability as a highly talented scientist and his mixed theoretical and practical background strengthened the Institute’s research record.

Kirill devoted his research to the design, analysis, and implementation of networked systems, broadly defined. In particular, he investigated network processors, switch fabrics, packet classification, network management, service architecture, cloud, and fog computing. The original contributions he made to this field of research were exemplified by publications in top dissemination venues such as the international conferences ACM SIGCOMM, IEEE INFOCOM, and ACM PODC. He also authored papers in top-tier journals within his area of expertise such as IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, IEEE Transactions on Communications, or Distributed Computing. While with IMDEA Networks, Dr. Kirill Kogan successfully supervised two Ph.D. students Pavel Chuprikov and Vitalii Demianiuk.

Dr. Pavel Chuprikov, who obtained his Ph.D. from IMDEA Networks and Higher School of Economics, Russia, in November 2019, thanked Kogan for his valuable guidance with these words: “I think I was very lucky having Kirill Kogan as my supervisor. He was also ready to spend time with me discussing things, always ready to help if I was stuck on something, to introduce me to things that I had little experience with. I think if it was not for him, I would have spent a lot of time by myself trying to get that experience that he gave me”.

Our most heartfelt appreciation for the scientific and personal dimension of Dr. Kirill Kogan.
